Guests leaving on a late flight often include their departure night in their reservation. This guarantees a full day of fun, showers and a leisurely dinner before heading to the airport. Here are some ideas when that's not possible:
1. Enjoy a day at beach parks like Poipu, Salt Pond, Kalapaki, Lydgate, Anini, Hanalei or Haena. All have showers. Then hit KP Lihue or Dukes for dinner before flying out. KP has tasty food, good service and is closest to the airport.
2. Save some of the longer drives for your last day. Spend the day in Waimea Canyon/Kokee State State Parks taking in the vistas, hike, stroll or just relax in the cool meadow across from the lodge. The park charges a fee for those choosing to visit the lookouts. Pay once and you're good for all other stops. Visit the natural history museum. Enjoy a delicious meal at Kokee Lodge. There is a cool, easy trail right behind the museum that's mostly under the forest canopy featuring endemic plants. There are many more hiking trails throughout the park including my favorites; Waipio Falls and Nualolo. Hanalei and Haena, in the opposite direction, have a fabulous range of beaches, restaurants, trails and more.
3. Kauai hosts wonderful botanical gardens and historical tours. Our favorites on the south shore are the Allerton and McBryde Botanical Gardens. On the east side, check out Kauai Museum, Lydgate Chocolate Farm, Grove Farm Homestead or the fun Rum Safari. North shore has Princeville Botanical Gardens, Na 'Aina Kai, and Limahuli Gardens.
4. Check out day passes for the Royal Sonesta by the airport or the Grand Hyatt in Poipu which also has Anara Spa.
5. Tasting Kauai offers tours around the island focusing on different areas on different days.
6. For movie buffs, check out Kauai filming locations. Rae-Marie at fabulous Honu Point Vacation Home has a terrific movie blog post.
